School of Advanced Studies in the Reappraisal of the Surplus Approach - 2027 edition

22-27 February 2027 Roma Tre University, Department of Economics, Via Silvio D'Amico 77, Roma (Italy)

Objective of the School:

The School’s purpose is to provide participants with a deeper understanding of the surplus approach as taken up and developed by Piero Sraffa and subsequent authors. Participants will therefore be introduced to the analyses of the Classical economists and to the modern research conducted within the reappraisal of their theoretical framework. The activity will embrace different topics, ranging from the theory of value and distribution to the study of economic growth, also dealing with applied analyses and policy issues. In addition, the School aims to stimulate participants into developing their own research by fostering contacts and scientific exchange between young researchers and expert scholars.

Organizing and Scientific Committee:
Roberto Ciccone, Saverio M. Fratini, E. Sergio Levrero, Antonella Palumbo, Daria Pignalosa, Davide Romaniello, Antonella Stirati, Paolo Trabucchi, Attilio Trezzini, Gabriel Zaffari.

Application:
The School welcomes applications by PhD students at any stage of their PhD as well as post-doc researchers. Candidatures by undergraduate and Master students will be considered only if their profile is exceptionally strong.
If you would like to attend the School, please fill in the application form by 15 November 2026. Please also send a curriculum vitae to cswinterschool2027@gmail.com.
As the effective organization and running of the School require a minimum number of participants, applicants will be informed by 25 November 2026 whether the School will take place on the dates indicated, in which case notifications of acceptance will be sent by the same date, or whether it will be postponed to a later date, to be announced.

Fees and funding awards:
The registration fee is €150 and includes teaching materials, coffee breaks and lunches.
Centro Sraffa is providing a limited amount of funding for grants to be awarded to selected participants as a contribution towards travel and/or accommodation expenses. Applicants for financial support are requested to specify whether they are applying for a contribution to travel and/or accommodation expenses, and the country or countries from which they will be travelling, together with a brief description of their research (300-500 words). A reference letter may also be sent to cswinterschool2027@gmail.com, if desired.
Since the effective organization and running of the School require a minimum number of participants, applicants are kindly requested to state whether their participation is conditional on financial support from the School.

Accommodation:
A limited number of rooms are available at special prices for the students of the School, at Villa Benedetta (www.villabenedetta.it). First-come first-served policy applies.
Organization of the School:
A) Teaching activity
The teaching activity is organized at two intertwined levels: lectures designed for a post graduated audience will be accompanied by seminars at a more advanced level on topics that may suggest research subjects for young scholars.
The lectures will introduce participants to the foundations of the main lines of research within the modern revival of Classical theory and are organized in four modules:
  • Classical Theory and Marginalist (or Neoclassical) Theory: Their Different Analytical Structures (Introductory Module);
  • the Critique of Neoclassical Theory (Module A);
  • the Surplus Approach to Value and Distribution (Module B);
  • the Classical-Keynesian Approach to Output Determination and Economic Growth (Module C)
B) Interactive sessions
Participants will be involved in interactive student-teacher sessions devoted to deepening and discussing topics covered in the lectures.
C) Poster session
The poster session will consist of the exhibition and discussion of panels prepared by the participants, describing their ongoing research activities. As specified in the application form, those who wish to participate in the Poster Session should send in a separate file a brief description of their research.
A provisional programme of the activities and the list of lecturers will be provided as soon as possible. Information about the previous editions of the School can be found on the Centro Sraffa website (http://www.centrosraffa.org/pastevents.aspx and http://www.centrosraffa.org/pastseminars.aspx)
